Where are Public Lending Rights heading?

In the UK the battle for government funds is hotting up, and to mark the forthcoming round of public cuts the Department of Culture, Media and Sports has announced the Public Lending Rights body is to be scrapped.

The organisation, which administers and distributes payments to authors as compensation for potential sales losses due to public libraries, is to be decapitated and its responsibilities rolled into another, as yet unnamed, organisation. While authors will remain eligible to receive payments, the Department of Culture, Media and Sports is awaiting the result of the UK’s comprehensive  funding review before they’ll reveal if the payments are to decrease as well.

British authors will be kicking themselves for keeping alive that  hackneyed cliché:  less is more.
